UTRGV working to register students to vote ahead of November elections
UTRGV is participating in a push to increase the number of registered voters.
Volunteers at the UTRGV campuses in Brownsville and Edinburg helped a total of 300 students either register as new voters, or made sure current registered voters had their updated information.
“A lot of our students won't have the opportunity to go to the county to get registered to vote, so we bring all of those opportunities here,” UTRGV Center for Student Involvement Assistant Director Mabel Cortina-Matos said. “We want our students to be civically engaged and civic minded, and to be able to effect a change in the community. In order to do that, we need to facilitate it."
Cameron County currently has more than 228,000 registered voters. Getting each one out to the polls is a challenge.
“During local elections, we're lucky if 10% [of registered voters] show up,” Cameron County Elections Department Outreach Coordinator Yoali Mclane said.
The last day to register to vote for the November 2023 election is Tuesday, Oct. 10.
