UTRGV student organization delivering food donations to 1,100 families
Every month, Brownsville residents like Mike Carroll go to the Good Neighborhood Settlement House to pick up food from the pantry.
Monday’s visit was different. Carroll was one of 100 families who were surprised ahead of Thanksgiving with food donated by the student organization, Enactus UTRGV.
“I didn't expect turkey, but I’m happy," Carroll said.
For the last several months, Enactus RGV has been holding a food drive for their annual Thanksgiving event, Cansgiving, to provide donated food to the community.
The Good Neighborhood Settlement House was one of eight locations chosen to be a distribution site.
“It just feels very fulfilling,” Enactus UTRGV President Alheli Mondragon said. “It's been a lot of work, but it's just something that we always want to do every year because it's just a way to connect with our community, and we all just love it."
Families receiving the donated food items are getting a turkey, along with canned goods and a recipe card.
The organization said they’re able to serve 1,100 families across the Rio Grande Valley this year due to all the donations they’ve received.
Enactus UTRGV will travel across the Valley to deliver the food donations until Wednesday, Nov. 27.
