EDINBURG – There’s a search on for a suspect caught on camera stealing mail in an Edinburg neighborhood.

The man is seen driving right up to a mailbox, opening it up and taking what’s inside.

Several residents say their mailboxes were targeted during the day and late night hours. The most recent incident occurred Tuesday.

“They know we are not here from certain hours, that's when they come in and they start checking all the mailboxes; stealing medications, stealing whatever,” said the homeowner.

The United States Postal Inspection Service has launched an investigation into the theft.

Silvia Torres, a USPIS inspector, said in a statement:

"I can confirm that the Inspection Service is now aware of this incident and is actively investigating it.  We take every report of mail theft seriously.  Mail theft is a federal and state crime punishable by fines and/or prison time.

If a customer believes their mail has been stolen, they should file a report with the USPIS.  They can do this online at www.uspis.gov or by calling 877-876-2455."
