After a pursuit involving Tamaulipas state police in Matamoros on Friday afternoon, officers were able to detain two injured men, according to a news release.

At around 4:00 p.m., state police were called out to a report of armed people in the San Francisco neighborhood. According to state police, while officers were patrolling Diagonal Cuauhtémoc St., officers were fired on from two vehicles. Authorities fired back and a chase began.

Police were able to stop a white Ford F-150 in the Santa Cruz neighborhood. Minutes later, officers stopped a gold-colored Chevrolet Suburban on Maestro Ave. in the Alianza neighborhood. At that location, police reported they were able to detain two injured men. They were then taken to the Pumarejo General Hospital and were in stable condition as of Saturday evening. State police have not released the names of the two men.

State police were able to seize one firearm, one two-way radio and tire spikes.

In October of last year, Matamoros was the scene of several police pursuits which paralyzed the border city. In the morning hours of Oct. 17, 2021, armed civilians in 10 vehicles led National Defense officers in a pursuit through Sendero Nacional Ave. and Constituyentes Ave., ending near Lauro Villar and Acción Civica. Eyewitness videos showed heavy gunfire during the pursuit passing by a flea market and the Plaza Patio Mall.

Days later on Oct. 22, 2021, the leader of the Scorpions faction of the Gulf Cartel Ariel "El Tigre " Treviño Peña died along with two other cartel members after a gun battle on Pedro Cárdenas Ave. near the Plaza Fiesta Mall.

The U.S. State Department has the Mexican state of Tamaulipas under a Level 4 Do Not Travel warning, stating "heavily armed members of criminal groups often patrol areas of the state and operate with impunity particularly along the border region from Reynosa to Nuevo Laredo"
