WESLACO – President Donald Trump announced the suspension of his plan to impose tariffs on Mexico Friday.

Trump says Mexico has agreed to take strong measures on migrants.

The decision was taken after three days of intense negotiations in Washington by Mexican and American officials.

President Trump announced in a tweet that Mexico will not face 5% tariffs after they agreed to increase efforts to stop massive migrant groups from reaching the U.S.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to South Texas College Professor, Dr. Kevin Peek about what would happen if the deal fell through.

"Just in the first month alone, as a direct consequence of the implementation of these tariffs, what we can expect in Texas is the loss of 117,000 jobs," says Dr. Peek.
