Three Weslaco city parks will soon be equipped with Wi-Fi thanks to $45,000 in federal funding, according to city Mayor David Suarez.

The money is coming from the American Rescue Plan, and will be used to build Wi-Fi towers.

Suarez said he hopes the move will help close the internet divide in the community.

“Not everybody has internet,” Suarez said. “They might have a phone, they might have a laptop, but they just don't have access because of where they live, so we are trying to make it more efficient. If you live close in close proximity to the park, you will be able to access."

The first park that'll be equipped with the internet is the Isaac D. Rodriguez Park, located at 1200 E 6th St.

Internet should be available there by the end of the summer.
