Texas proposition lets voters decide whether to increase pensions for retired educational employees
One of the charter amendments on the ballot for the Nov. 7 election is Proposition 9.
That amendment increases pensions for retired educational employees.
If approved by voters, this would affect teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, and anyone who has worked in education.
Retirees haven't seen a pension increase for 19 years.
“We have the funds, we just need the permission of the voters so that the legislature can do the cost of living adjustment, or allow the cost of living adjustment,” retired educator Neida Ruth Grantland said.
Grantland added that the amendment is an essential step to help retirees cope with inflation and rising costs of living.
Early voting ends on Friday, Nov. 3.
