BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Police in South Texas have fatally shot a 20-year-old driver after investigators say he used his vehicle to ram at least two patrol cars while fleeing during an assault investigation.

Brownsville police say Mark Anthony Galvan was shot around 1:30 a.m. Monday after officers responding to an assault call tried to stop his vehicle. Police say Galvan sped away and officers chased him.

Police spokeswoman Melissa Gonzalez did not immediately say how many officers shot Galvan or further details about the suspect, who died at a hospital.

Brownsville police did not immediately return a message Tuesday to provide additional details.

Texas Rangers are also investigating the fatal shooting.
