MCALLEN- CHANNEL 5 NEWS found the suspect in a shooting of a DPS Trooper has a criminal background.

According to Hidalgo County records, Victor Alejandro Godinez has an open criminal case.

Last September, he allegedly became involved in an accident resulting in damage to a vehicle.

Records show Godinez left the scene of the crash, without giving his name, address or registration number for the vehicle.

He also allegedly failed to give the name of the insurance company.

Godinez was set to appear in court for a pre-trial hearing on April 2.

The case was reset to May 2.
