Authorities in Cameron County are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a 20-year-old man they say ran over his girlfriend in July.

The victim — identified as 19-year-old Jaylene Carranza — remains hospitalized in Harlingen following the crash.

Carranza’s mother — Becky Silva — said she has not left her daughter’s bedside.

“I thought I was going to lose my baby, the doctors constantly remind her how lucky she is to be alive,” Silva said. “She didn't deserve this; she trusted the wrong person — a person that promised to keep her safe."

Cameron County Park Rangers say Carranza's boyfriend, Rolando Jaeden Alejandro, ran over the teen at Beach Access Number Five in South Padre Island.

Park rangers questioned Alejandro when the accident happened but he was not arrested, Cameron County Park Rangers Chief of Police Horacio Zamora said.

“When the officers arrived, he was lying to the officers, trying to throw off the investigation,” Zamora said, adding that vehicles are not allowed in the area where the accident happened.

Zamora said he believes alcohol may have played a factor in the crash.

“We found some bottles that they could have been drinking, empty bottles of beer,” Zamora said.

Alejandro lives in Weslaco and has relatives in Donna. Authorities say they’ve checked out the areas where Alejandro could be, but they have been unable to find him.

As authorities hunt down Alejandro, Carranza continues to recover from more than a dozen fractured bones, and a ruptured liver and kidney.

“She's still pending surgeries, but… she's a fighter, a true warrior,” Silva said. “We're hopeful that she's gonna be walking soon.”

There are multiple warrants out for Alejandro’s arrest.

Alejandro is described as a white male with brown eyes, black hair, and a height of 5’11 and weighs 180 pounds.

Those who’ve seen Alejandro are urged to contact the Cameron County Park Ranger Division at 956-459-8842.
