Three generations of a family in the Starr County community of Salineño were gathered on the porch of their home Monday, cleaning up what was left of it.

On Saturday, a fire destroyed the home on Este Road.

“I lived here all my life, I raised my children here and so it broke my heart,” Veronica Ibañez said. “All I had time was just to get out and save myself and my pets."

Ibañez said she was in her room Saturday night when the fire started. 

“My heart is shattered, I'm heartbroken," Ibañez said. “It breaks my heart to come, and see that it's no longer my home."

Ibañez said amid the devastation, her gratitude for her life is what's keeping her head up. She said she and her family is staying with other relatives for now.

The Salineño Volunteer Fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
