A spike of traffic on Highway 4 in Brownsville led to the installations of speed radars in the area.

The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office requested the speed radars due to a spike in traffic just off of FM 511 due to SpaceX-related activities.

A woman who lives near the area said she’s noticed the traffic increase.

“It’s just people going to the beach to the island or to Boca Chica Beach or something,” Ana Claudia Garcia said. “But now with SpaceX and everything, we have semi-trailers coming and going, and it's really crazy in the mornings."

Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza cited safety concerns for students and school staff in the area because of the nearby Ben Brite Elementary School.

Garza did not say for how long those speed radars will remain.
