SpaceX and T-Mobile announce plan to fill dead zones with Starlink satellite coverage
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert announced a new partnership between the two companies that could benefit the Valley in the event of a natural disaster.
The partnership will merge space and cell phone service by using the existing and growing network of SpaceX Starlink satellites across Earth's orbit to fill gaps in cell phone coverage in the U.S.
“The important thing about this it means there are no dead zones anywhere in the world for your cell phone,” Musk said.
During a Thursday press conference at the Boca Chica SpaceX launch site, Channel 5 News asked both CEOs if cellular connectivity in the Valley would improve under this network in the face of a natural disaster.
“Even if an entire region or country lost connectivity because of a severe hurricane or fires, floods or tornadoes or earthquakes, there are so many natural disasters,” Musk said. “Even if your cell phone towers were taken out, your phone would still work.”
