The body of a middle-aged man who was found on the side of the road on the east side of Brownsville Wednesday morning has been identified.

Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza says two people were walking when they found the body of 53-year-old Luis Rivera Gonzalez next to a resaca near the intersection of Illinois and Milam. 

"Our investigators went to the scene and determined there was foul play and it was a murder," Garza said. 

Gonzalez's body was taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Autopsy results are pending. 

An investigation is underway.
