The San Juan Fire Department is expanding their swift water rescue division after receiving a state grant.
Last week, the fire department received a $135,000 grant to be used to buy four boats. The money will also go toward training seven additional firefighters in water rescues.
“It's for securing and assisting any other agencies that should need any water crafts along the border from Brownsville to Laredo, and they can be utilized for evacuation during flooding,” San Juan Fire Chief Tirso Garza said.
San Juan's fire department currently has five firefighters certified in water rescues. Their new boats are expected to arrive in about four months.
