Road Closures Continue Near SpaceX Site at Boca Chica Beach
NEAR BROWNSVILLE – Road closures continue on the way to Boca Chica Beach near the SpaceX site.
Cameron County sheriff deputies barricaded the road about 5 miles from the SpaceX launch pad.
Wilfred Milet and his wife Joan say they drove from South Padre Island to visit the SpaceX site, but were stopped at the law enforcement checkpoint and turned back.
Milet says now that SpaceX is here to stay, officials need to figure out a better way to communicate when road closures occur.
He knew the road was closed Thursday but was surprised it was closed again Friday.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to SpaceX to find out if any tests were conducted Thursday or Friday and why the road closures were needed on both days.
SpaceX officials said in a statement:
"SpaceX will conduct checkouts of the newly-installed ground systems and perform a short static fire test in the days ahead. Although the prototype is designed to perform sub-orbital flights, or hops, powered by the SpaceX Raptor engine, the vehicle will be tethered during initial testing and hops will not be visible from offsite."
