Rio Hondo Water Supply Corporation expanding water facility
Millions of gallons of water are treated every day at the North Cameron Regional Water Facility that sits along Highway 107.
The East Rio Hondo Water Supply Corporation is working to double the capacity of that facility.
East Rio Hondo Water Supply Corporation General Manager Brian McManus says the expansion project for their reverse osmosis water treatment plant is laid out in phases.
Phase one includes adding new water wells and different types of treatment equipment.
The East Rio Hondo Water Supply Corporation was approved with financial assistance of almost $19 million. That funding will help the plant go from treating 2.3 million to five million gallons of water per day.
“As droughts seem to becoming more frequently and becoming much more intense, we want the capability of being able to run our system and ensure our members have water when the drought gets severe enough that the water is not dependable,” McManus said.
The plant produces 17% of the corporation's water. The rest is supplied by Cameron County Irrigation District #2.
Phase one should be completed in around three years.
