Rio Hondo residents anticipating opening of new park
Plans are underway to open a $1.2 million park in Rio Hondo.
It’s a project that’s more than 10 years in the making, and will feature a campsite.
Local business owners say they hope the five-acre park will attract more people to their town.
The new park sits on the west side of Rio Hondo near Harris Road off of West Colorado Avenue. The park will have walking areas, bike trails and a campsite with room for over eight RVs and several tents.
The city also added a new kayaking spot where they encourage people to come out and boat. They also built a fishing spot.
“We are hoping it will be a destination spot," Rio Hondo City Administrator Ben Medina said. “It should be open late summer or early fall, we are all excited, and we are anticipating the opening.”
Medina says the project is primarily funded through grants, and only $200,000 is coming from the city's budget.
The park still does not have a name. Medina says Rio Hondo ISD students were asked to come up with several names and vote for their favorite and present it to city commissioners.
