Rio Grande City police reacts to proposed DPS facility in the area
Starr County law enforcement regularly works with state and federal partners.
Now, the state is planning to build offices and training centers in the area for the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard.
Rio Grande City's assistant police chief says he's looking forward to the new DPS facility, as it could add opportunities for the agencies to train together.
“You might have a state and local officer be the first two on scene, and it's good to be able to cross train our officers where we both know exactly what we need to do,” Rio Grande City assistant police Chief Jose Solis said.
DPS and the Texas National Guard already have a large presence in Starr County under Operation Lone Star.
Both agencies still need to find the land for the training center. It’s unclear when the project will start.
