Residents react to Pelicans Pub fire at Port Mansfield
Authorities are investigating a fire that burned down a local Port Mansfield landmark.
The fire occurred early Friday morning at the Pelicans Pub. Port Mansfield Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department John Thompson said the call came in at 4:05 a.m. and no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
Volunteer firefighters battled the blaze with their pumper truck, but the fire was already too underway to stop.
"It's just devastating to all the people in the community because this is one of the best restaurants. It's the one we enjoy," Jim Mackle said, a frequent visitor to the restaurant.
The Pelicans Pub served as a hangout for the small community, but now, the patio overlooking the water is destroyed.
The fire is being investigated by the Raymondville Fire Marshall, and the community is sending a message of support to the people who worked there.
