NEAR LA JOYA – A small town along Highway 83 once had all the potential of any Rio Grande Valley city.

Now, Fort Sam Fordyce, located west of La Joya, sits abandoned and empty.

The town was founded in 1902 and later became a military fort complete with a post office, a store and a hotel.
