Students at Vida Clover Elementary School in San Juan are learning life skills thanks to a mini-city located within the campus.

On Friday, the elementary school launched “Bear Valley,” a student-led simulated city that allows students to work as city council members, cashiers, bankers and other jobs.

The students run 14 different shops including a baker, a movie theater and a nail salon.

The students earn "Bear Bucks" through jobs and good deeds. The money is then deposited into their bank accounts to be used to shop in the city.

“It's not real money, we have our own economy within the school,” Vida Clover Principal Kristine Garza said. “We've talked to them about what an economy is and how our economy is a little different from the outside economy.”

The students said the program is teaching them how to budget.
