Police report filed against former McAllen pastor, Catholic Diocese of Brownsville says
A police report was filed against a former pastor of the Our Lady of Sorrows parish in McAllen following an allegation of sexual misconduct that occurred nearly 35 years ago, according to a statement from the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville.
The police report was filed by the Diocese’s victim’s assistance coordinator against former Msgr. Gustavo Barrera, according to the statement released Wednesday.
Channel 5 News reached out to the Diocese to find out where the police report against Barrera was filed. A spokesperson said they'd have more details on Thursday.
Barrera was removed from ministry duties on March 15 after the Diocese received the report from the victim’s assistance coordinator. Barrera then submitted his resignation on March 23, which was accepted by Bishop Daniel E. Flores.
According to the statement released by the Diocese, the victim’s assistance coordinator met with the person who came forward, but they declined to report the allegation to police.
“However, as per policy, the victim’s assistance coordinator did file a police report on this matter,” Flores said in the statement.
Barrera is still listed as the pastor of the Our Lady of Sorrows church on their website. The website states Barrera has served as a pastor there since 2007.
Those who are victims of sexual abuse are encouraged to contact police and the Texas Department of Protective Services at 1-800-252-5400.
