Four men were arraigned on drug charges on Friday following raids at two different homes, according to San Juan Police Chief Leandro Sifuentes Jr.

The men – identified as Gilberto Garza, Juan Carlos Treviño, Javier Azuara Meza and Erick Bugarin — were arrested after nearly 10 pounds of marijuana, $26,000 in cash and half a kilo of cocaine were confiscated at the homes.

Sifuentes Jr. said police started the investigation after their bike patrol division received a tip of the drug activity at the homes.

The San Juan Police Department created the bike patrol division in 2023. According to Sifuentes Jr., four officers were assigned to ride through neighborhoods, and build relationships with the community.

Now, the division has a total of eight officers, and it's building more than trust.

“At the beginning we thought bike patrol was just to engage with the community, but the feedback we are getting, tips we are getting, is leading us to remove criminal activity,” Sifuentes Jr. said.

The bikes allow police to patrol areas of the city not accessible in police units, Sifuentes Jr. said, adding that he wants to hire three officers who are dedicated solely to the bike division.

“Right now, what we have is officers that are on regular patrol who take their time from being out in a vehicle, and they will go on a bike,” Sifuentes Jr. said.

Maria Flores, who resides in the neighborhood on East 2nd Street where the raids occurred, said she wants the bike officers to stick around to help deter the crime.

“It feels like they are taking better care of San Juan,” Flores said.
