Point Isabel students affected by deadly Laguna Heights tornado getting ready to return to school
Minervo Bello says she's thinking about what's next for her and her 8-year-old granddaughter.
Like everyone else in her community of Laguna Heights, Bello experienced a life-changing moment in May when a tornado struck the area, killing one person.
Bello said the roof of her home was destroyed in the tornado, and her floor sunk in.
“We haven't been able to rebuild,” Bello said of her unlivable home. “It is something that you will never forget in your mind, seeing so many sirens, screams, the air from the sheets flying, all of these are traumas…the kids keep talking about it."
Bello, along with 10 other Laguna Heights families, are still staying at a hotel. Her granddaughter will go into the third grade at Point Isabel ISD.
According to Point Isabel ISD Superintendent Teri Capistran, 75 district students were impacted by the tornado.
“It's devastating again to see these children who are going to get on a bus and when they get back, their home is a hotel right now,” Capistran said.
The district is trying to help students by providing clothes, shoes and school supplies.
“It's truly a community effort in order to help out these families,” Capistran said.
Donations from different organizations are helping. The KRGV Cares Tornado Relief fund raised more than $30,000 for Laguna Heights families impacted by the tornado, but Capistran says more support is still needed.
“We still have so many of our families that are literally living day by day counting every penny and dollar that they have,” Capistran said.
The district plans to help families find long term housing.
Those hoping to donate clothes and school supplies to Laguna Heights students can drop them off at the Point Isabel central office, located at 101 Port Road in Port Isabel.
