A water tower that hasn’t been in use in six year still towers over the city of Progreso.

The tower was used by the Military Highway Water Supply Corporation.

“There's no greater urgency in replacing this tower than the tower we're working on right now,” Eden Ramirez, the attorney for the Military Highway Water Supply Corporation, said.

Ramirez said demolition of the water tower was approved in July, and plans are in place to replace the 1,000 water tank with one capable of holding double that amount.

The tower was first built in the 1980s, and Channel 5 News was assured the tower is not in danger of collapsing.

The water corporation received $2.6 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the project, which is expected to cost $3 million.

The corporation is expected to go out for bids in the fall for the demolition of the water tower.

Ramirez told Channel 5 News he estimates the new water tower would be in service in 2027.
