Organizations Reach Out as People in US Illegally Avoid FEMA Aid
WESLACO – Places of worship land private charities are playing a larger role in Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts for people in the country illegally.
Those people are not eligible for federal disaster aid, but their children qualify if they have legal status and are under 18 years of age.
FEMA’s application warns parents who apply on behalf of their children that physical addresses and other information may be shared with immigration officers. It suggests consulting an attorney or other immigration experts.
Authorities said information on immigrants seeking disaster relief generally isn’t shared.
