Two dogs from the valley are among the 55 that were removed by police from a shelter in Arizona.

The owner of that Arizona shelter, April McGlaughlin, was charged by police in September with animal abuse.

The charges have since been dropped, while police look for more evidence, but the dogs are no longer at the Arizona shelter, according to Yaqui Animal Rescue, a center based in Sullivan City.

The rescue says they sent two of their dogs to the Arizona shelter in the summer because they had special needs.

Last week, the shelter said both of their dogs, Butters and Checko, are doing better.

"Butters and Checko are doing okay. Butters is finally back with us in Texas with his original foster. He's pretty emaciated and has a lot of anxiety, but he's doing well. We expect him to survive," Alyssa Cerroni with Yaqui Animal Rescue said. "Checko is having some behavioral issues, because we think that she may have hurt him while in her care. So he's remaining in Arizona until it's safe enough for him to travel."

The rescue says Checko is now staying with the Handover Rescue in Arizona.

Yaqui staff would like to be reunited with Checko, but right now, both rescues are working together to see who will care for him.

Yaqui Animal Rescue says it will continue to pursue criminal and civil charges against the Arizona shelter operator.
