New industrial park in Roma expected to reduce wait time for truck inspections
On Tuesday, Channel 5 News was given an exclusive tour of Roma’s incoming 300-acre industrial park.
The city says because of a rapid growth in trade, they need to reduce wait times at the Roma-Ciudad Miguel Alemán International Bridge.
Expanding the bridge is not an option, Roma City Manager Alejandro Barrera said.
“It's limited in size and it's landlocked, so there's no more room for growth,” Barrera said.
The city’s new industrial park will be the site of a secondary station for commercial truck inspections. It will have the capacity for up to 22 trucks at a time, and has 11 acres for trucks to wait, as opposed to the two acres at the current port — easing congestion on the bridge.
“We average about 200 trucks a day that cross through our port of entry,” Barrera said. “Out of that 200, about 60% of it is produce."
The 300,000 square foot station also has cold storage, something the current port doesn't.
Barrera says they've seen more and more companies coming through their port, and they expect to see that number grow.
Despite a few weeks of delays, phase one of the park — which includes the inspection station — is expected to be complete by June 2024.
