National Hispanic Heritage Month Holds Strong Valley Ties
EDINBURG – National Hispanic Heritage Month is designed to coincide with the anniversary of Mexico’s Independence from Spanish rule.
Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla is referred to as “the father of Mexico’s independence”.
It was he, on Sept. 16, 1810, that gave the call to arms and started the revolution against Spain.
Hidalgo County is named after Father Hidalgo and there is a bust of the Roman Catholic priest on the courthouse square.
Hidalgo County was founded in 1852.
There are countless celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month in the Rio Grande Valley and around the country.
A volunteer for an event in Harlingen says we should never forget where we came from and where our ancestors came from.
