A shooting Thursday morning at a home in Pharr was a sad misunderstanding to the mother of a 18-year-old man shot.
She says she placed a call for help and police responded. She adds when they showed up her son had a BB gun.
Police described that in their report as what looked like a rifle.
He was shot when he went for his phone, according to his mother, who also says the 18-year-old is mentally ill.
Mark Dantzker, a former police officer, mental health worker and professor of criminal justice at UTRGV says training for police to deal with people who are mentally ill still has a lot room to grow.
