BROWNSVILLE – A few months back, Kai Money was out having fun at his home in South Padre Island. That day some unexpected news came when he checked his phone.

“I got a text from my dad saying, ‘hey keep your phone around.  If it rings just answer it.’  And I was like, okay, that's kind of weird in a way,” said Money.

The call ended up being Greg Tepper, a writer for Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

"We chatted for about 30 minutes when he told me I was going to be the cover boy for the magazine I was like, wow, what a great honor,” said Money.

Money has been the starting quarterback at St. Joseph Academy since his freshman year. For him, being recognized by Dave Campbell’s is not about individual success. It’s about the team and putting Bloodhound football on the map.

“Putting the school on the spotlight it's really good, “ said Money. “In my opinion we don't get all the credit we deserve. Not only St. Joe, but the entire Valley. Just being able to represent the Rio Grande Valley, as well as my school in Brownsville, it just means so much to me.”

The day the magazine hit the stands, Money got his own copy. As he turned to the private school section, there he was as the cover boy sporting Bloodhound red. Money looked through the magazine for the first time with his family by his side.

“There was a lot of anticipation,” said Money. “It was just really good being able to see it the day it came out with my mom and dad.”

Money’s jaw-dropping 109 touchdowns surely helped him earn the cover in Dave Campbell’s Magazine. With his senior year just weeks away, Money and the Bloodhounds are working hard to validate that preseason recognition.

“We definitely have high expectations but it doesn't change,” said Money. “We work out, we come to 7-on-7 and it’s really just trusting the process.”
