McAllen receives $25 million grant to expand Anzalduas International Bridge
The city of McAllen was awarded $25 million to expand the Anzalduas International Bridge.
Only passenger vehicles are allowed to cross the bridge, but once the project is done, commercial trucks will be able through the bridge, even with products in tow.
The federal funding comes from a U.S. Department of Transportation's grant program, Infrastructure for Rebuilding America.
The money will help pay for new inspection booths, docks, roads, parking and sidewalks.
McAllen City Manager Roy Rodriguez said this upgrade is long overdue.
"We just had a capacity issue, right, it's obvious, and I think it was obvious to the federal government," Rodriguez said. "So what this does is that it places all the infrastructure for you know roadways, cargo bays where trucks are traveling through, x-ray machines—it is the most advanced technology."
The x-ray machine will be large enough to scan cargo trucks.
The official groundbreaking for the project is set for October, and construction could take up to two years to complete.
