Families everywhere have been impacted by the tragedy in Uvalde, as well as law enforcement. 

Local agencies like McAllen Police Department have regular tactical training to properly react to active shooter situations. 

The McAllen Police Department conducted one of those training Tuesday at a local elementary school. 

"It is a scary feeling because you have no idea who's planning what, who wants to do what at what time," said Robert Canul, whose brother is in high school. 

"The reason for a horn is to detect where your threat is, to localize it, to contain it, to go in there and neutralize it if you have to," McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said. 

This is just one of the many drills McAllen PD's emergency services unit, or SWAT team, performs to train for an active threat. 

"We've got a squad that we build out as far as 28," Rodriguez said. "We're going to 32 here pretty soon and so we split those up, and we go every month - somebody gets something different."

McAllen PD's jurisdiction spreads across four Valley school districts, as well as STC and some vocational schools.

In addition to school facilities, they train in retail stores, convention centers, and movie theaters.

The tactical training uses the post-Columbine approach.

"When we talk about neutralizing your threat, we're talking about taking them out if he threatens your life or she threatens your life," Rodriguez said. "So, that hasn't changed."

Rodriguez says there's been a shift to familiarize themselves with modern school layouts.

"Uvalde makes us want to understand doors better," Rodriguez said. "Makes us want to understand windows better, makes us want to understand there's some classrooms, for example, that have through ways."

Canul says it is the reassurance he is looking for. 

"Knowing that there's all these people taking precautions for your safety it's a really big reassurance thing for me," Canul said.
