The McAllen Police Department is no longer in charge of the city’s animal care services.
The services — previously called McAllen Animal Control — is now under the city’s health and code enforcement office.
The city also announced changes are being made to what calls crews respond to.
The city will no longer pick up stray dogs and cats, unless the animal has given birth or attacked a human.
There will also be no more pickups for possums, snakes, and raccoons.
Nancy Trevillo, director of the city’s health, code and animal care services, said the changes are meant to ease the intake levels at the Palm Valley Animal Society shelter.
The shelter has been at or over capacity for the last several months.
