McAllen city leaders approved a two-year contract with Palm Valley Animal Society on Monday.
The city is paying $950,000 a year for PVAS to pick up stray animals, and for the shelter to take care of up to 2,400 animals a year.
The approval was made the same day McAllen city leaders adopted an ordinance limiting the number of household pets to eight.

In the spring, two animal hoarding investigations in McAllen involved the discovery of a total of nearly 160 animals found in two homes.
PVAS took in the majority of the confiscated animals.
When asked for comment, PVAS officials said they could not comment on the new McAllen ordinance.
