DONNA – While many enjoy Fourth of July celebrations with family members, many in the Rio Grande Valley community may find themselves suffering.

A McAllen psychiatrist who specializes in post-traumatic stress disorder says veterans are the most vulnerable when it comes to this holiday.

Dr. Esteban Gonzalez says symptoms of the condition can cause a high level of anxiety and arousal, including frightening vivid nightmares or flashbacks.

He says during the Fourth of July holiday, however, many lose a sense of safety due to large crowds and loud fireworks.

KRGV’s Trason Bragg reached out to a veteran who says people should reconsider when it comes to these types of celebrations.
