Valley produce companies are seeing a direct impact from the delays at the international bridges due to a new inspection policy.

Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to conduct enhanced safety inspections of commercial vehicles coming into Texas from Mexico, a move aimed at stopping the smuggling of migrants, drugs and other contraband.

Several international bridges are seeing delays in truck drivers attempting to cross into Mexico.

Local produce companies said they're struggling to keep their shelves stocked because they currently don't have the produce.

Rolando Garza, the grower relations and business developer for Amore Produce, said his company has been receiving only 30% of their usual shipments.

The product they've been receiving so far is still in good shape, but they're expecting that to change very soon, since they worried that their trucks will run out of fuel - which means any refrigerated produce they're carrying will likely spoil.

"Of course the heat could be completely damaging, and maybe we need to throw away everything because it's not that quality that we expect in the United States,” Garza said.

A representative for another produce company said it’s only a matter of time before consumers will begin to notice higher prices for their produce.
