Local health official gives tips on Halloween candy safety for diabetics
Halloween and candy go hand in hand, but you still have to be mindful not to overdo it, especially for people living with diabetes.
But that doesn't mean trick or treating is off limits.
Local health officials say candy can still be part of the fun, as long as there is moderation or alternatives like sugar-free candy.
Halloween can be difficult for children with diabetes, but the holiday does not have to be a bust.
Hidalgo County Health Authority Dr. Ivan Melendez says moderation is key and a little bit of candy is okay.
He says people with type one diabetes, also known as the juvenile diabetes, should still follow their carbohydrates and sugar restrictions on Halloween.
"And of course, there are alternatives, sugar-free candies, natural foods, complex carbohydrates. There is no reason why people who are type one diabetics or type two diabetics cannot enjoy the holiday season," Dr. Melendez said.
Another tip he gives is for parents to plan ahead, like talking to neighbors and asking if they can give out things that are not candy like fruit, pencils or stickers and avoid snacking on candy to control the amount being eaten.
Dr. Melendez says he also recommends parents talk to their kids about candy limitations.
