Change is coming soon to the Sullivan City community as they get ready to open its very first library.

Construction was delayed during the pandemic, but now it's set to wrap construction in just under two weeks.

Ismael Flores is originally from Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, but he's lived in Sullivan City for 38 years. He spent only one year in grade school, but he has a passion for learning.

It's why he can't wait for what's coming right next to his house.

"We're so proud that they're building that right there," Flores said.

The community will soon be able to take advantage of several resources at the Leonel "Leo" Garcia Library. After delays in the process during the pandemic, crews are finally working on the finishing touches.

Sullivan City Mayor Alma Salinas is a former librarian, and she calls the library one of the most important projects she's worked on in her time as mayor.

"As a librarian, I can tell you that there are so many benefits to having a library," Salinas said.

She says it's needed in her community, where English literacy rates are low and access to internet and computers is scarce.

The project started three years ago, but the completion date was pushed back during the pandemic.

But with construction finally expected to wrap on November 2, the library is one step closer to opening and offering community programs like home gardening.

Once construction wraps up, Salinas says she estimates doors will be open within six months.
