Increase of Cartel Violence in Reynosa Impacting Residents
REYNOSA – The power struggle between criminal groups unfolding in Reynosa has residents seeking cover.
A video of a man warning residents of upcoming turf wars around the city started circulating on social media this week. The message has already been shared more than 28,000 times.
A man coming from Mexico told CHANNEL 5 NEWS he drove past two bodies this weekend. He said he now keeps an eye out everywhere he goes.
The masked man is allegedly a member of an unknown criminal group, according to former FBI agent Art Fontes.
“This guy knows what he’s there for, what his objective is,” he said.
Fontes said the man also announces bounties.
The former FBI agent said the city is under siege. He said members of the M42 group, the splinter of the Gulf Cartel, were left behind when plaza leader “El Toro” was killed by the Mexican military last month.
The Mexican military, assisted by state and federal police, are cracking down on several criminal groups such as the Metros Gulf Cartel faction from Matamoros, the Cartel Del Noreste, a group located northwest from Nuevo Laredo and a legacy from the Zetas, and the Jalisco Cartel.
All these groups are looking to expand their control.
Fontes said the Mexican military will take guns and ammunition away from the cartels as they keep advancing.
“You’re going to start seeing more extortions and extortions also lead to extortions on the U.S. side,” he said.
Fontes predicted the violence will last for another two to three months.
