Nora Lazo is among thousands of people who just received her first of two property tax statements.

When she opened this year's bill, the San Juan homeowner said she was worried her home's value would increase.

“The truth is we are super confused," Lazo said. “We are confused because we are getting a statement saying we don't have to pay anything.”

Lazo pays taxes for PSJA ISD. It’s one of eight Hidalgo County school districts asking voters to decide on a change to their tax rate.

Hidalgo County Tax Assessor-Collector Pablo Villarreal says people living in the boundaries of those districts will get a second property statement after next week's election

Villarreal said the school districts holding the elections will be in charge of sending the second bill, but school district elections are not the only thing causing confusion this tax season.

Texans are also deciding on Proposition Four, which would raise the homestead exemption from $40,000 to $100,000, meaning taxpayers may never get a tax statement if their home is valued under $100,000.

Villareal says all 250,000 statements sent out already have the $100,000 exemption applied. However, if Texas voters vote against Proposition Four, all tax statements will have to be resent.

Those with any questions about their tax statements are encouraged to call the Hidalgo County Tax Office at 956-205-7050.
