MERCEDES – Crowd sizes are prompting more security measures at Rio Grande Valley events.
The Department of Homeland Security is adding extra eyes at the Mercedes livestock show and at South Padre Island for spring break.
On Monday, agents went around the livestock show grounds connecting cameras.
Assistant Special Agent Maria Michel-Manzo says the livestock show is considered a high-level event, because more than 100,000 people are expected to attend.
It’s the agency’s third year setting up cameras at the Mercedes event, but it will be its first time at South Padre Island. Agents will also be patrolling on foot.
