Young women facing misdemeanors in Hidalgo County will soon have a new support system to put them on a path to turn things around.

The Hidalgo County Juvenile Court is launching a first-of-its-kind program to provide the young women a second chance.

The Mental Health Court is a different approach to a problem Hidalgo County's juvenile court system has faced for years.

"They've already used the discipline type and trying to hold them accountable in just language, but now it's getting them involved in their transformation,” Creative Being counselor Christina Velasquez said.

The support system is for girls between the ages of 13 and 17, who've been in and out of the juvenile justice system repeatedly.

"The issue is rehabilitation, and we want to focus on their trauma, focus on their care, focus on so many things about them not what they did, but about them, to help them overcome it, "449th District Court Judge Renee Betancourt said.

Counselors like Velasquez say these teens are still young enough to turn their life around, and programs like this are exactly what these teens need to do it.

As part of the program, 25 girls will be selected, and a counselor will meet with them, their attorney, and Judge Betancourt to create an individualized plan.

Depending on the teen, the program can last anywhere between nine months to a year.

The program starts in May. The 25 teens who participate can have their probation shortened, or their records automatically sealed.
