When early voting starts on Monday, - election sites in Hidalgo County will all feature new hybrid voting machines.
"Because of Senate Bill 598 that went into effect on September 1, 2021, the new law mandated that we retrofit our current voting machines to a hybrid voting machine,” Hilda Salinas, Hidalgo County Elections Department assistant director said.
That new state law requires that all machines either be converted - or retrofitted - to also produce paper ballots by 2026.
The machine works as an electronic touch screen but after you've made your selections, the ballots are printed and voters are able to take their printed ballot to a scanner where it will be tallied with the other votes.
