Hidalgo Co. Emergency Management Dist. 2 reinstates contract with Hidalgo Co. EMS
UPDATE (7:04PM): Soon after the report was aired, CHANNEL 5 NEWS was told Hidalgo County Emergency Services District 2 reinstated the contract with Hidalgo County EMS and South Texas AirMed, effective immediately.
The decision was made in a meeting Wednesday afternoon with city leaders from Elsa and Mercedes, along with District 2 officials.
Delta region residents will now have a steady 24/7 emergency service provider for the first time in three months.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS is told the hold up was due to paperwork disputes.

ELSA – Worry is spreading among some residents living the delta region of Hidalgo County.
People say they don’t have emergency management services in the surrounding areas of Elsa, Edcouch and Monte Alto, and are left waiting for neighboring cities to assist.
Hidalgo County Emergency Services District 2 is responsible for the delta region. Last October, the services from District 2 cancelled their contract with Hidalgo County EMS and the district has been searching for a full time replacement ever since.
Director of Operations Marco Romero says Mercedes will be stepping in to have ambulances stationed in Edcouch.
The Mercedes mayor confirmed the city would be helping in the delta region, but mentioned the ambulances would be stationed in Mercedes – not Edcouch.
