A $30 million advanced manufacturing training facility is setting up shop near the Port of Brownsville.

Officials with Texas A&M, the city of Brownsville and the state of Texas were in Brownsville Tuesday for the groundbreaking of the Texas A&M RGV Advanced Manufacturing Hub.

“This is not just a big deal for Brownsville, it's a big deal Valley-wide," Interim Port of Brownsville Director William Dietrich said. “The beauty goes beyond manufacturing at that point, the beauty goes to being able to provide economic opportunities for our community."

Texas A&M is helping train those workers for the jobs of the future, such as robotics

Governor Greg Abbott made a stop in Brownsville to be a part of the celebration, and he said projects like these are important to the future of the Rio Grande Valley.

“Y'all are on the precipice of extraordinary economic opportunity — economic opportunity in literally every subsection of our economy,” Abbott said. “Definitely robotics is one, definitely space is another."

Some of the training provided at the facility will be in manufacturing, and different advanced skills like mechatronics and robotics

“If a chip manufacturing wanted to come in we can certificate their technicians, if a hospital needs medical technicians we'll do that for them,” Texas A&M University System Chancellor John sharp said.

The facility is set to be completed in 2026, and the programs will be free.

Information on the courses being offered is available online.
