Fugitive arrested at the Hidalgo Port of Entry in connection with June 2000 murder
A 47-year-old fugitive who had been on the run for nearly 23 years was arrested Sunday after trying to enter the country through the Hidalgo Port of Entry, according to the county sheriff’s office.
Rigoberto Resendez was wanted in connection with the June 2000 death of a man who had been assaulted at the Players Club near Donna, according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim died as a result of his injuries from the assault, and witnesses identified Resendez as the suspect.
Resendez was taken into custody after a record check at the port of entry showed he was wanted for murder.
On Monday, Resendez provided a statement implicating his involvement in the June 2000 murder. A judge set his bond at $250,000.
A second individual — Juan Antonio Ramirez — was arrested and charged in the murder on June 2000, the sheriff’s office stated.
Records showed Ramirez was found not guilty of murder in 2005.
