Fire at Vacant House in Weslaco
WESLACO - An investigation is underway after an early morning fire in Weslaco on Sunday. Firefighters responded to the fire near Fifth Street and Nebraska Avenue just after 11 a.m. Crews arrived to find the structure fully engulfed.
"It was an abandoned house," said Marco De Hoyos with the Weslaco Fire Department. "It had burglar bars all around. It was hard for us to get in there and extinguish the fire."
CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke with people who live near the house. They say there are a number of forgotten houses in their neighborhood.
Francisca Uribe has lived in Weslaco for three years. She said she wasn't surprised to see the house in flames Sunday morning.
"Sometimes I call the cops because at two, three in the morning - you hear people arguing or running around and it makes you wonder, 'are they going to go inside or what are they going to do,'" Uribe said.
The Weslaco Fire Department said the cause of the fire is still unknown.
