Official: House Fire in Pharr Appears to be Accidental
PHARR – A house fire in Pharr claimed the life of a person Saturday; another remains in critical condition.
Fire Chief Lenny Perez says a mattress caught on fire in one of the bedrooms. Two men tried to put out the fire by taking it to the bathroom, but they got caught inside.
“We always teach that when you find a fire inside your residence, close the door to that bedroom, or room, that it's confined to. That way you starve the fire a little bit and let the professionals come in and turn off the fire. Vacate the residence more than anything else,” explained Perez.
Jose Luis Chavez, III died in the fire. The other man is being hospitalized at a burn center in San Antonio.
Perez says they’re still investigating how the mattress caught on fire, but the cause appears to be accidental.
Officials will continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
